The Ongoing Debate Over Heat vs. Cold Treatments

Within the field of medical care there always a number of ongoing debates about which methods are most effective for treating patients. One such debate that involves chiropractors is the debate regarding the use of ice and heat in treating different ailments. As many Orange County Chiropractors work with athletes and people that live physically strenuous lives, this is an important debate because chiropractors want to ensure that these individuals are as healthy as they can be and are capable of carrying on their lifestyle.

Benefits of Heat
  • Good for treating bruises
  • Heals fatigued soft muscles
  • Alleviates the pain of minor sprains
  • Assists with blood vessel dilation
  • Decreases inflammation
Benefits of Cold
  • A decreased nerve transmission in pain fibres
  • Reduces the activity of free nerve endings
  • Raises the pain threshold
  • Causes a release of endorphins
  • Cold sensations over-ride the pain sensation

Orange County Chiropractors Offer Tips On How To Eat Better

Is there anybody who doesn't constantly attempt to eat better? That's a question that many medical scientists and Orange County chiropractors ask themselves on a regular basis. This is because 66% of the American population is overweight and seems to have a difficult time sticking to a healthy eating plan. For some people it's a matter of being over stressed and overworked while others are busy with family, school and whatnot. Regardless of why you might be having a difficult time eating right there are things you can do to help ensure that you need is best as possible all the time.
  • It's not about low-fat versus low-carb. You can actually eat foods that are less fattening and consume fewer calories without having to eat less food so be sure to pick and choose carefully when deciding what to eat. Eating foods with too few calories will cause you to be hungry much sooner than you want to be and you'll consume more food than next time you eat you can avoid this by eating foods that are lower in fat and not just calories.
  • Do not diet! You need to change your lifestyle. It's not about saying "I can't have that because I'm on a diet" but rather "I don't want that because I no longer eat that way".
  • Consider keeping a food journal for months or a least a very few weeks to be aware of what and when you're eating. Additionally paying attention to physical cues that your body gives you can help you determine what your body needs. It's also a good idea to ask yourself "am I really hungry" and make sure you're eating because you're actually hungry and not because something smells good, are stressed out, or are board.
  • Do not restrict the food you eat. Though this may sound somewhat odd it's actually true that there are no such thing as bad foods but only in appropriate portion sizes. Neglecting certain food groups will cause you to crave those foods and even begin bidding on them.
  • Try to avoid bad carbs and eat as many good cards you can. Good cards include fruits, vegetables, and unrefined grain such as brown rice. They are extremely high in fiber which slows absorption and fill you up before you take into many calories.
  • Eat less red meat. Some doctors may disagree with this but the fact that red meat is loaded with lots of saturated fats and has been linked in some studies to an increased risk of cancer.

Orange County Chiropractors Advise On Food Cravings

The Orange County chiropractors of the Gateway Rehab & Wellness Center focus on a great number of things to help keep their patients healthy and help them live a healthier and more productive life. This includes all things food and even food cravings. There is an ongoing and heated debate about whether or not food cravings are a matter of the mind are general health issue. Though those responsible for researching this matter share different opinions at the moment there is plenty of common ground to be found within the debate and the staff at the Gateway Rehab & Wellness Center have begun incorporating these early findings into their dietary programs.

For example is recently been discovered through several studies that women tend to crave specific types of food much more than men do. It's been found that this is due to a woman's hormones. Individuals who constantly crave foods that are high in fats and sugars have been found to sometimes have complications regarding their health. Regardless however of why you crave what you do medical scientists now know and agree that food cravings stem from a complex combination of emotional, hormonal, and biochemical factors. One of the biggest factors for cravings is blood sugar imbalance while emotional and hormonal imbalances contribute to cravings too though on a far lesser scale.

It's important to manage your cravings and make good decisions regarding the food you eat in order to live as long and as healthy as possible. If you are having difficulty managing your cravings you might want to try one or all of the following tips from the Orange County chiropractors at the Gateway Rehab & Wellness Center.
  • Do not skip meals. Skipping meals causes your blood sugar fall low which causes food cravings and binge eating.
  • Avoid eating too much sugar and too much salt as these can make cravings much worse.
  • Reduce the ingestion of drinks like coffee, tea and caffeinated soft drinks. Drink water instead.
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners.
  • Reduce your intake of processed foods.
  • Exercise regularly because studies are showing that exercise reduces cravings for foods that are not necessarily good for you.

Orange County Chiropractors Making Their Patients Happy!

Patients who visit the Orange County chiropractors at the Gateway Rehab & Wellness Center often have great things to say about their treatments and the staff. Here's one of our most recent!

I am taking this opportunity to give a testimonial for Dr. TJ VanDusen with respect to ordering a particular supplement from his company.

I sent Dr. VanDusen an email asking if he carried a particular calcium supplement. He met with me after BNI on 7/6/10 with the supplement that he carried and showed me the differences between the product I asked for and the one that he carried. He had taken the product that I asked for and researched it and found a product that was better.

I was so impressed that he had taken the time to research a better product for me that I will be ordering all my supplements through Dr. VanDusen. I find that we just assume that any product we purchase from a doctor that we trust is the best one for us, but I have found that with Dr. VanDusen, he goes that extra mile for his patient to get the very best for them.

This is a doctor who cares very much for his patient.

Orange County Chiropractors Offering Treating Depression Tips

Depression is a serious health condition which affects millions of Americans yet most people don't realize that depression is often linked directly to poor health and vice versa. Not all areas of depression are understood but there have been significant advances in what we know about the disorder. Depression can be frustrating because recovering from it can take considerable time and generally speaking even those who want to get over their depression need help staying motivated and on the road recovery. Sometimes depression is treated with drugs and sometimes a psychotherapy. Other times medical professionals such as Orange County chiropractors will prescribe a change in lifestyle rather than costly medicine that can sometimes make the situation worse. The following is a list of things you can do to help stave off depression as well as manage it should you be depressed.
  • Changes In Lifestyle - A change in lifestyle that includes regular exercise can have very beneficial effects in the prevention of depression returning and can help keep it at bay as well. Those already suffering from depression will find that regular exercise eases their anxieties, loneliness, and sadness.
  • Dietary Changes - Not only should depressed individuals seek to eat better but they should also consume foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These acids occur naturally in fish oils, flax seeds, hence seeds, canola oils, and even walnuts. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are effective as an antidepressant.
  • Magnesium Treatments - Many recent studies have reported findings that demonstrate rapid recovery from major depression when using magnesium treatments. Other studies have found Ginkgo Biloba to be equally as effective as a natural antidepressant and it's been reported to stabilize cell membranes which inhibits lipid breakdowns and keep cells healthy. Evidence has also shown that herbal and dietary supplements can decrease depression. These are all very affordable ways of treating and avoiding depression and those interested in pursuing these types of treatment should speak with an Orange County chiropractor.

Orange County Chiropractor Offers Advice On Managing Stress

Stress is one of the major problems that adults face throughout their lifetime. Unmanaged stress can lead to a whole host of health issues including debilitating diseases and costly medical bills. There are ways however to manage even the most overbearing stress and stay healthy. The Orange County chiropractors at the Gateway Rehab & Wellness Center regularly treat patients for stress and teach them how to manage it to minimize damage. The following is a list of things that you can do in order to manage your stress and even remain stress free.
  • Get Your Adrenals Tested - Having your adrenals tested by an Orange County chiropractor can help determine whether or not you have adrenal overload. Most Americans have adrenal overload and are in a constant state of stress simply because they're always in fight or flight mode. An Orange County chiropractor will be able to tell you what your adrenals are and can then formulate a program to help you manage those levels and reduce stress.
  • Dietary Changes - The old adage that says you are what you eat accurately describes most Americans and the fact that so many Americans have problems with stress and the health issues related to it can in part be traced back to diets. Things like sugar, processed foods, caffeine, junk foods and carbs should be weened out of a diet when you're looking to manage your stress levels. An Orange County chiropractor can help you determine what should and shouldn't be a part of your diet so be sure to speak with one before you change your diet.
  • Breathing - Breathing deep is a wonderful stress reducer and anyone looking to reduce their stress or manage it should remember to remain calm whenever possible and take deep soothing breaths. Breathing isn't difficult and we all know how to do it and in addition to that it's completely free so taking a moment for a few deep breaths every now and then can really reduce stress.

Orange County Chiropractor Following The Link To Vitamin D Deficiency And Autism

Autism is a hot topic these days and the medical community is still hard at work in search of both the cause and preventative measures. The Orange County chiropractors at the Gateway Rehab & Wellness Center follow closely the subject of autism and the research surrounding it.

The Vitamin D Council is a nonprofit organization that works hard to end the epidemic of vitamin D deficiency around the world. This Council regularly provides updated information on the battle against autism and its latest findings are both astounding and full of hope. The most recent news comes out of Sweden and focuses on psychiatric outpatients. Recent research has shown that 10 adult patients with autism had the lowest vitamin D levels of any other group including those patients with schizophrenia and depression. Perhaps even more interesting is that the research showed that some patients with depression and schizophrenia seemed to improve when treated within average of about 4000 IU of vitamin D per day.

The research has also shown that mothers of autistic children have very low vitamin D levels as well. The data also shows that the vitamin D levels of mothers who gave birth to autistic children to be much lower than normal. Even more encouraging is that more and more scientists are getting on board with the vitamin D hypothesis. One of the most recent medical scientists to show support for this theory is Dr. Darryl Eyles of the University of Queensland. Dr. Eyles has gone on record as saying that this hypothesis is extremely parsimonious which has lent considerable weight to the research.

There has also been considerable research done that has shown pregnant women need about 5000 IU per day and that in getting that amount may actually decrease the chances of autism in their unborn children. Research has also shown that 5000 IU a day of vitamin C reduces competitions of pregnancy much more than it does for mothers whose intake does not exceed 2000 IU per day. Vitamin D is an extremely important vitamins during pregnancy and women should seek to take the right amount every day.

With the news of all this recent research being made public many parents have begun upping the amount of Vitamin D that children receive on a daily basis. Vitamin D is inexpensive and upping the dosage is extremely low risk and based on the research thus far is extremely beneficial to children as well. Children with autism may well benefit from an increased Vitamin D dosage and many parents of autistic children have begun implementing this diet change in hopes of seeing improvement in their child's condition.

Of course before changing diets or introducing a higher or lower dosage vitamins into a diet you should first speak with a qualified medical professional such as a medical doctor or even an Orange County chiropractor. Medical health professionals will be able to help you determine what your body needs and what is best for your body so again, be sure to contact someone in the health industry before you implement any diet or lifestyle changes. You can reach the Orange County chiropractors at the Gateway Rehab & Wellness Center via e-mail or by phone at (949) 454-8811.
